Hariette, born in Hove, was one of a family of four artistically talented sisters. She initially attended Brighton College of Art and went on to teach there later. She also studied art in London. Hariette spent a thirty-year career teaching, sketching and painting all over the UK. Her body of work included figure, landscape and still life painting. Her works were consistently exhibited at the annual Royal Academy exhibition over the period 1881 – 1892 with one London newspaper commenting on the impressive record. She also produced about eighty commissioned portraits, always signing herself H.E. Grace. Her sisters Frances and Anna Marie were also ‘portrait artists and teachers of drawing’ but it appears that Hariette had the greatest career success. She was a member of the Sussex Women’s Art Club and two of her paintings are in the Hove Museum of Creativity.
