Honor Appleton was an artist and illustrator of children’s books who lived most of her life in Brighton. She had a delicate watercolour style, very much of its day and was influenced by Kate Greenaway, Mabel Lucie Attwell and others. Honor began her career as an illustrator and continued to develop her own distinctive style. Honor utilised the child’s point of view, often showing adults from only the knee down. She illustrated widely and her works include the fairytales of Hans Christian Andersen, William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and a retold version of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Children’s Alice. Her watercolours were exhibited at the Royal Academy. During her career Honor illustrated over 150 children’s books and created illustrations for the popular Josephine books by Mrs Augusta Craddock featuring a family of dolls. By 1911, Honor was living in Hove, with her mother and sister. She was active in her local community, both artistically and socially, and was a member of the Sussex Women’s Art Club.
